Step into history at the Church of Saint Pantaleon, an early Romanesque sanctuary dating back to the 10th century in Cologne, Germany. As the oldest church of the cult of Saint Pantaleon west of Byzantium and one of Cologne's twelve Romanesque churches, this former monastery site carries a remarkable past. Originally the site of a Roman villa, you can still view ancient villa remains in the crypt today.
Consecrated to Saint Pantaleon and Saints Cosmas and Damian, the church serves as the burial place for Holy Roman Empress Theophanu, who ordered the construction of the current facade, as well as Archbishop Bruno the Great. Inside, you will discover impressive artistic works and sacred shrines. Marvel at the nave's detailed coffered ceiling depicting the Tree of Jesse and portraits of saints, alongside the westwork ceiling illustrating the Heavenly Jerusalem.
Explore historic shrines holding the remains of Saint Alban, the first Christian martyr of Britain, and Maurinus of Cologne, plus a modern shrine dedicated to Saint Josemaría Escrivá. Over the centuries, this resilient building has served as a Benedictine abbey, horse stable, garrison church, and Old Catholic mass location before post-war restoration, even welcoming Pope Benedict XVI in 2005.
