Why Cologne

Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany and the most populous municipality in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, housing more than one million residents within its city limits and over 3.1 million across its broader urban area. Located along the Lower Rhine, primarily on the river's left bank, it forms a major component of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. Geographically, Cologne sits roughly 35 kilometers southeast of Düsseldorf and about 22 kilometers northwest of Bonn.

The settlement originated in the first century BC under the Germanic Ubii tribe before being established in AD 50 as the Roman colony Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, named after Agrippina the Younger. It functioned as the capital of the province of Germania Inferior and a headquarters for the Roman military until Frankish forces took control in 462. By the Middle Ages, Cologne's strategic location at the intersection of major trade routes helped it prosper into a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire and a prominent member of the Hanseatic League.

Following periods of French rule starting in 1794 and incorporation into Prussia in 1815, Cologne grew rapidly during 19th-century industrialization. During World War II, severe aerial bombardments destroyed approximately 80 percent of the ancient city center and reduced the resident population by 93 percent, primarily due to evacuations. Subsequent post-war reconstruction carefully rebuilt many major architectural landmarks, leaving a current cityscape that preserves around 9,000 historic buildings alongside restored city gates.

The city is globally recognized for Cologne Cathedral, a medieval landmark constructed to house the Shrine of the Three Kings that stands as the world's tallest cathedral and held the record as the world's tallest building from 1880 to 1890. Beyond the cathedral, the cityscape is shaped by twelve historic Romanesque churches, preserved subterranean Roman sewers, and ancient archaeological remains near the wharf. Cologne is also famous as the origin of Eau de Cologne, which has been produced in the city since 1709.

As a cultural and academic hub for the Rhineland, Cologne features over 30 museums, hundreds of galleries, and the Cologne Trade Fair. It hosts major educational and research facilities, including the University of Cologne, the Technical University of Cologne, the German Sport University Cologne, and the German Aerospace Center. Economically, the city maintains strong automotive and chemical industries and serves as the corporate headquarters for Lufthansa, with regional transportation facilitated by Cologne Bonn Airport and nearby Düsseldorf Airport.
