Why Grimma

Grimma is a historic town located in central Germany within the state of Saxony. Positioned in northern Saxony along the left bank of the Mulde River, it lies 25 kilometers southeast of Leipzig and 16 kilometers south of Wurzen. The municipality forms part of the Leipzig district and encompasses numerous outlying districts and merged suburban communities, including Döben, Hohnstädt, Höfgen, Beiersdorf, Kaditzsch, Schkortitz, Naundorf, Neunitz, Grechwitz, Dorna, Großbardau, Kleinbardau, Bernbruch, Waldbardau, Nerchau, Thümmlitzwalde, Großbothen, and Mutzschen.

First referenced in records dating back to 1065, the settlement's name is of Sorbian origin, and the town itself was officially founded around 1170. Historically, local rulers such as the Margraves of Meissen and the Electors of Saxony frequently stayed at the town's castle. In 1550, Grimma was selected to host one of the three elite Princely Schools of Saxony designed to prepare students for public service and university education. Built on the grounds of a former Augustinian monastery, this institution remains active today as the Gymnasium St. Augustine public boarding school. The town also experienced witch trials between 1494 and 1701. During the 19th century, Grimma grew as a result of its placement along the secondary rail route connecting Leipzig and Dresden via Meissen, reaching a population of nearly 9,000 by 1890.

Visitors to Grimma can observe a variety of historic architecture spanning several centuries. Key structures include a town hall originally erected in 1442, the traditional grounds of the Fürstenschule, and a historical brewing school. Because significant portions of the town rest within a floodplain, severe flooding from the Mulde River impacted the area in 2002—destroying the historical Pöppelmannbrücke bridge—and again in the summer of 2013 during ongoing efforts to construct municipal flood defenses.

Grimma maintains international connections as a sister city to several communities, including Bron in France, Gezer in Israel, Leduc in Canada, and the German towns of Rüdesheim and Weingarten. Over the centuries, the town has served as the birthplace or home to notable figures across engineering, academia, the arts, and athletics.
