Why Filderstadt

Filderstadt is a German town situated in the district of Esslingen, within the southern state of Baden-Württemberg. Located about 13 kilometers south of Stuttgart, the municipality offers a regional base directly adjacent to both the Stuttgart Airport and the Trade Fair grounds. Travelers can access the area via public transit, as the S2 line of the Stuttgart S-Bahn network terminates directly at Filderstadt station.

The modern municipality was established in 1975 through the merger of five smaller villages: Bernhausen, Bonlanden, Plattenhardt, Sielmingen, and Harthausen. Local history and regional heritage are tied to these distinct constituent communities, which together form the present-day town structure.

Several historic and notable figures are associated with the area. The Swabian poet Eduard Mörike delivered his initial sermon at the Jakobuskirche in Bernhausen and resided locally in 1829 during his time as a vicar. Additionally, Michael Ende, the author of children's literature such as Momo and The Neverending Story, passed away in Filderstadt in 1995. The town is also the birthplace of Princess Claire of Luxembourg, born in 1985.

Filderstadt has hosted prominent international sports events, serving as the venue for the WTA Tier II Porsche Tennis Grand Prix from 1978 until 2005. Economically, the municipality previously served as the headquarters for the airline Contact Air.
