Why Witten

Located in the southern Ruhr region of western Germany, Witten is the largest city in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis district within the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Positioned along the Ruhr valley, the municipality shares its borders with neighboring communities such as Bochum, Dortmund, Herdecke, Wetter, Sprockhövel, and Hattingen. Home to roughly 100,000 residents, the city plays an important role within its surrounding urban network.

Witten's historical records trace back to its first official mention in 1214, though its Herbede district boasts earlier roots dating to the year 851. The area developed into a mining town during the late sixteenth century. In the late 1800s, it gained prominence for producing Roburit dynamite used in international coal operations, an industry marked by a fatal explosion in 1906. The town's modern political history includes its incorporation into North Rhine-Westphalia in 1946 and joining the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis district in 1975. The city's official crest, which depicts two lions, originated in 1283 from the founding Everhards von Witten-Steinhausen family.

The municipality is organized into eight main boroughs: Witten-Mitte, Düren, Stockum, Annen, Rüdinghausen, Bommern, Heven, and Herbede. Each of these sectors is divided into smaller numbered city districts.
