Why Suffolk
Suffolk is an independent city situated in the Hampton Roads metropolitan region of Virginia, near neighboring communities such as Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach. It holds the distinction of being the largest municipality in the state by land area, covering nearly 400 square miles of land. The city features extensive waterfront property along the Nansemond and James rivers, and its vast geographical footprint encompasses a portion of the Great Dismal Swamp.
Prior to European colonization, the surrounding region was inhabited by the indigenous Nansemond people. Colonial settlers established a port community on the Nansemond River in 1742, initially calling it Constant's Warehouse before renaming it Suffolk after the English home county of Royal Governor Sir William Gooch. Over the centuries, the community developed into a critical land and rail transportation gateway. In the early 20th century, the city became a major hub for the peanut industry, marked by the founding of Planters' Peanuts in 1912 and the creation of its mascot, Mr. Peanut. The present-day boundaries of the city were finalized in 1974 through a merger with Nansemond County and the towns of Holland and Whaleyville.
Outdoor enthusiasts and culture travelers can discover several historic landmarks and natural areas throughout Suffolk. The Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge provides dozens of miles of trails, which can be reached via entry sites like Washington Ditch off White Marsh Road. Additional outdoor recreation is available at Lone Star Lakes City Park off Godwin Boulevard, where visitors can ride or walk along more than four miles of unpaved rock paths. Rail history is preserved at local landmarks, including the Seaboard Station Railroad Museum and the former Norfolk and Western Railway station on Hollady Street. Each autumn, the city highlights its agricultural history by hosting the annual Suffolk Peanut Fest.
Travelers can reach Suffolk via a network of primary roadways, including U.S. Highways 13, 17, 58, 258, and 460, alongside State Route 10. Interstate 664 passes through the northeastern area of the city, connecting motorists to the Monitor–Merrimac Memorial Bridge–Tunnel, which spans the harbor waters to Newport News. Within the municipality, local public transportation is provided by Suffolk Transit buses.
