Why Suzhou
Suzhou is a prefecture-level city located in northern Anhui Province, China. Positioned where the Tuohe and Xinbian rivers fork, both of which drain into Hongze Lake, the municipality shares boundaries with the provinces of Jiangsu, Shandong, and Henan, alongside the neighboring cities of Huaibei and Bengbu. Formerly named Su County, the area encompasses five county-level divisions, including Yongqiao District as well as Dangshan, Xiao, Lingbi, and Si counties.
The region experiences a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate featuring four distinct seasons. Winters are generally cold and damp, recording a January mean temperature of 1.2 degrees Celsius with nighttime lows dropping below freezing. Summers are warm and humid, averaging 27.6 degrees Celsius in July. The city receives an annual average precipitation of roughly 855.2 millimeters, with the majority of rainfall concentrated between the months of May and August.
Cultural practices in Suzhou are showcased through several annual events. During the traditional Sacrifice to the Kitchen God, residents place food and incense on tables and baijiu on the floor to worship deities, leaving the offerings untouched for roughly a day before sharing food with family and friends. When local pear trees bloom, people gather outdoors for picnics during the Pear Flower Festival, which is accompanied by an evening broadcast on Anhui TV. The city also hosts the Sacred Stone Festival at the Suzhou QiShi Museum to display sculpted Lingbi rocks, where the mayor selects the top stone to be sent to the National Museum of China.
Travelers can explore various environmental and architectural sites across the area. Huangzangyu National Forest Park, situated in the southern Taoxu Mountain range, is marked by limestone hills, natural caves, freshwater springs, and rock formations culminating at Pingdingshan peak at 389 meters above sea level. In the Lingbi County Economic Development Zone, the Zhong Kui Wine Culture Museum highlights classical Huizhou architecture. This multi-building complex features white walls, black tiles, horse head walls, courtyards, bridges, and curved corridors surrounding a main exhibition hall that covers more than 500 square meters.
