Step back in time at the Sydney Mint, located at 10 Macquarie Street in Sydney's central business district. Known as the oldest surviving public building in central Sydney, this State Heritage-listed landmark offers a fascinating look into Australian history. Built between 1811 and 1816 as the southern wing of the famous Rum Hospital, the site originally treated convict patients and the free poor.

By 1855, the location transitioned into the first overseas branch of Britain's Royal Mint, converting massive amounts of gold rush wealth into official sovereign coins until its closure in 1926. When you visit, you can admire classical design details loosely inspired by ancient Greek architecture and Macquarie's time in India. Look closely at the two tiers of cedar timber columns, which are subtly angled inwards to create an optical illusion echoing the Parthenon in Athens.

You will also see surviving elements of the coining factory created behind the main block. Today, the site serves as the head office for Museums of History NSW, with select public sections open for you to explore alongside nearby historical neighbors like the Hyde Park Barracks.
