Why Szentendre
Szentendre, also known as Saint Andrew, is a historic riverside town in Pest County, Hungary, situated between the capital city of Budapest and the Pilis-Visegrád Mountains. Famed for its strong artistic heritage, the town features a high concentration of visual art galleries, specialized museums, and local creative professionals. Thanks to its charming historic architecture and straightforward transit options by rail and river, it is a frequent day-trip destination for visitors staying in the capital.
The townscape possesses a distinct Mediterranean atmosphere, defined by cobblestone streets, narrow winding alleys, historic churches, and restored Baroque-style residences. The historic center developed near Bükkös Brook, where the twelfth-century town nucleus originally stood around St. Andrew's Church. Beyond the core downtown and nearby Donkey Mountain, the modern town incorporates traditional historical areas such as Izbég and Derecske, as well as several surrounding green-belt districts.
Szentendre's origin includes early Magyar settlement at a ruined Roman fortress by Prince Kurszán in the ninth century. After being nearly emptied of inhabitants during the Ottoman period, the settlement was rebuilt by diverse foreign arrivals in the late seventeenth century. A notable mass immigration of Serbs occurred in 1690, alongside Dalmatian settlers who established homes along what became Dalmát Street on Donkey Mountain. Official city status was granted in 1872, followed by the opening of a railway line to Budapest in 1888. The founding of the Szentendre Artists' Colony in 1929 transformed the community into a prominent creative hub, which today remains home to over two hundred writers, painters, sculptors, and performers.
Among the principal attractions is the Hungarian Open Air Museum, established in 1967. This extensive site illustrates the daily living conditions, interior furnishings, and social structures of Hungarian village and urban life from the late eighteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, and features Europe's longest museum railway line. Within the town itself, art highlights include the Károly Ferenczy Museum, the Margit Kovács Ceramic Collection, the ArtMill, and a wide variety of contemporary galleries.
Visitors to Szentendre can make use of an array of tourist services, including local restaurants and souvenir shops. The town is directly connected to Budapest by Line 5 of the BHÉV suburban electric railway, which provides frequent train service to and from the Batthyány tér metro station.
