Tokyo Tower 🇯🇵

Tokyo Tower, officially named the Japan Radio Tower, is a prominent communications and observation landmark situated in the Shiba-koen district of Minato, Tokyo, Japan. Completed in December 1958, the 332.9-meter lattice tower was designed by Tachū Naitō with engineering support from Nikken Sekkei Ltd. Modeled after Paris's Eiffel Tower, it is painted in alternating bands of international orange and white to adhere to aviation safety rules. Reaching a height that made it Japan's tallest artificial structure until 2012, the landmark remains a distinct reference point on the city's skyline.

The tower was planned during the 1950s post-World War II economic boom to consolidate television broadcasting across the Kantō region after public and commercial stations began expanding. Designed to symbolize national recovery, the structure was built by hundreds of traditional high-rise laborers using steel, a portion of which was sourced from damaged military tanks. Engineered to survive extreme earthquakes and high typhoon winds, the tower served as the region's main transmission hub for decades before digital television requirements prompted the construction of the taller Tokyo Skytree.

At the base of the structure lies FootTown, a five-story building housing restaurants, souvenir shops, and entertainment facilities. Its current offerings include various dining outlets, convenience stores, and RED° Tokyo Tower, a multi-floor esports park featuring virtual and augmented reality games. FootTown's offerings have shifted over the decades, previously including an aquarium, a wax museum, and a manga-themed indoor park. On weekends and holidays, guests have the option to ascend an outdoor stairwell consisting of approximately 660 steps from the rooftop to the lower observatory.

Visitors can access two viewing areas above the base: the two-story Main Deck positioned at 150 meters and the smaller Top Deck at 249.6 meters. In addition to a café and private lounge, the Main Deck houses Tower Daijingu, central Tokyo's highest Shinto shrine. Dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the shrine supplies visitors with unique seal stamps, fortune charms, and wooden votive tablets made from forest-thinning efforts in Kochi Prefecture, which are purified by a chief priest and associated with academic and personal success.

Supported by tourism and antenna leasing, Tokyo Tower continues to transmit signals for local FM radio stations such as Tokyo FM and InterFM. To preserve its vibrant appearance and regulatory safety colors, the tower undergoes a comprehensive repainting process that takes a full year to complete every five to seven years.
