Why Tongren

Tongren is a prefecture-level city situated in the eastern portion of Guizhou Province, China. Positioned amidst an agricultural region prominent for crop production and tobacco farming, the municipality spans 18,000 square kilometers and functions as a key regional passage, earning it the moniker Gateway to Eastern Guizhou. It borders Chongqing to the north and Hunan Province to the east.

Historical records trace the area's administration back to the Qin and Han dynasties, when it was organized under Qianzhong and Wuling counties, respectively. During the Ming dynasty in the early 15th century, the Yongle Emperor dispatched military forces to suppress local resistance, establishing a centralized provincial administrative authority whose officials were designated directly by the imperial government. Long designated as Tongren Prefecture, the region was officially reorganized into a prefecture-level city in late 2011.

Among the region's most prominent geographical features is Mount Fanjing, or Fanjingshan. Serving as the tallest summit in the Wuling Mountains, this site holds notable spiritual importance in Buddhism and earned recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. The protected natural reserve encompassing the mountain acts as the sole wild sanctuary for the endangered Guizhou snub-nosed monkey. Elsewhere in the municipality, the Wanshan District historically gained recognition as a primary center for mercury and cinnabar extraction.

Tongren experiences an inland humid mid-subtropical monsoon climate, maintaining an annual average temperature of roughly 18 degrees Celsius. Springtime yields fluctuating conditions with frequent light rain, leading into hot, sunny summers where July averages reach between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. Autumn brings quick cooling alongside overcast, rainy days, while winter remains comparatively moderate with January averages ranging from 2 to 6 degrees Celsius. Travelers accessing the region can utilize the Tongren Fenghuang Airport, situated 21 kilometers from the city.
