Why Tottori
Tottori is the capital and largest city of Tottori Prefecture, situated in the eastern Chūgoku region of Japan along the mouth of the Sendai River and at the base of the Chūgoku Mountains. Positioned largely within the San'in Kaigan Geopark, the city sits near Koyama Lake and features a humid subtropical climate marked by hot summers, cool winters, and plentiful rain throughout the year. It serves as the primary administrative and commercial center for the surrounding area.
Historically part of the ancient Inaba Province, Tottori developed around Tottori Castle, which was completed in 1545. During the Edo period, the castle town functioned as the seat of the Ikeda clan, who governed the Tottori Domain. Formally incorporated as a city in 1889, Tottori underwent extensive rebuilding following a major earthquake in 1943 and a destructive fire in 1952. Over time, municipal redistricting expanded its territory to incorporate numerous surrounding towns and villages.
The city is widely recognized for the Tottori Sand Dunes, a prominent natural area that also serves as a location for agricultural research. Nearby, the Tottori Sand Museum features indoor displays of sand sculptures crafted by guest artists under chief sculptor Katsuhiko Chaen. Historical landmarks include the ruins of Tottori Castle at the foot of Mount Kyushouzan, the French Renaissance-style Jinpūkaku residence, and Kannon-in, a temple known for its traditional Japanese garden. Other notable stops include Ube Shrine and the Watanabe Art Museum, which houses an extensive collection of samurai armor and weapons.
Tottori hosts distinct cultural events throughout the year. During the summer, the city holds the Shan-shan Festival, where teams dress up and perform dances using large umbrellas trimmed with small metal bells. Early summer also brings the San In Beach Party, a weekend festival featuring performances by national DJs. Local culture is further reflected in the holdings of the Tottori Folk Crafts Museum, the Tottori Prefectural Museum, and regional traditions such as the Kaigara Bushi folk song.
As a transportation hub, Tottori is served by Tottori Airport and connected by major road corridors, including the Tottori, San'in, and San'in Kinki Expressways alongside National Routes 9, 29, 53, and 373. Rail transport is operated by JR West along the San'in Main Line and the Inbi Line, providing access through Tottori Station.
