Union Square is a 2.6-acre public plaza and vibrant district in downtown San Francisco, bordered by Geary, Powell, Post, and Stockton Streets. Originally a large sand dune set aside as a park in 1850, it earned its name from Civil War pro-Union rallies and holds status as a California Historical Landmark. Today, you will find a renowned gathering spot and shopping hub surrounded by upscale boutiques, department stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, luxury retailers such as Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co., and theater options nearby.

As you wander the plaza, you can admire public art, including the central Dewey Monument—an 85-foot column topped by a nine-foot statue of Nike, goddess of victory—and painted heart sculptures situated at its four corners. You can explore nearby narrow alleys like Maiden Lane, marvel at historic hotels like The Westin St. Francis, or head to the adjacent theater district.

While recent retail closures have shifted the neighborhood landscape, Union Square remains a major downtown destination. You can easily reach the square via the Powell Street cable car lines or the underground Central Subway station.
