Why Ürümqi

Ürümqi serves as the capital, political, cultural, and commercial heart of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwestern China. Situated at an average elevation of 800 meters between the main Tian Shan mountain range to the south and the Bogda Shan to the east, the city holds a Guinness record as the most landlocked city on Earth, located approximately 2,500 kilometers from any coastline. It sits positioned between two major arid expanses: the Gurbantünggüt Desert to the north and the Taklamakan Desert to the south.

The area's history traces back to early Silk Road trade routes and ancient nomadic groups. In 648 CE, under the Tang dynasty, a town named Luntai was established to serve as a local administrative seat and collect taxes from passing caravans. The Qing dynasty conquered the area in 1755, building a fortified settlement named Dihua, which grew into a major commercial center. In 1884, Dihua was named the official provincial capital. The historic name Ürümqi, originating from terms meaning beautiful pasture, was formally reinstated in 1954.

Despite its desert surroundings, natural runoff from nearby mountain glaciers—such as Tianshan Glacier No. 1 at the source of the Ürümqi River—has long nourished the area, supplemented in modern times by the Irtysh–Ürümqi Canal system. A notable attraction in the city's southwestern suburbs is a monument marking the designated geographic center point of Asia. Over recent decades, the city has developed into a primary regional transport hub connected by rail to eastern China, supported by economic growth in sectors such as energy production.

Visitors to the city experience a continental climate featuring dramatic seasonal temperature shifts. Summers are warm to hot and relatively sunny, with average July temperatures reaching 24.2 °C (75.6 °F) alongside low humidity levels. In contrast, winters are frigid and dry, with January daily temperatures averaging −12.2 °C (10.0 °F) and heavy atmospheric haze frequently occurring during the coldest months.
