Why Valdes Peninsula
Valdes Peninsula is a coastal nature reserve situated along the Atlantic Ocean in the Viedma Department of northeastern Chubut Province, Argentina. Bordered to the north by the San Matías Gulf and connected to the Patagonian mainland by the Carlos Ameghino isthmus, this 3,625-square-kilometer area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Puerto Madryn is the closest large town to the territory, while the modest settlement of Puerto Pirámides is the only town on the peninsula itself, where sheep are also raised on local estancias.
Much of the interior terrain comprises barren, arid land containing several salt lakes. The largest of these bodies of water lies roughly 40 meters below sea level, a spot formerly regarded as the lowest elevation in Argentina and South America prior to measurements at Laguna del Carbón. Native land mammals and birds roaming the inland areas include guanacos, maras, and rheas.
In the surrounding marine environment, the protected waters of Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José lie between the peninsula and the mainland. These gulfs offer warmer, calmer conditions than the open ocean, serving as the world's most significant breeding sanctuary for southern right whales, which arrive to mate and give birth from May through December. The coastline also supports colonies of elephant seals, sea lions, and fur seals, while orcas in the nearby open sea are known to drive themselves onto the shore to hunt these marine mammals.
Together with nearby Punta Loma and Punta León, the peninsula is designated as an Important Bird Area. At least 181 avian species have been observed here, including Cape petrels, kelp gulls, rock shags, imperial shags, and South American, Cabot's, and royal terns. A major feature of the coastal birdlife is a breeding population of approximately 150,000 pairs of Magellanic penguins.
The peninsula has a cold desert to semi-desert climate influenced by westerly winds and coastal marine interactions. The region records a mean annual temperature of 10.6 °C, with winter monthly averages around 8 °C bringing frequent frosts, and summer monthly averages reaching 18 °C with occasional peak temperatures up to 35 °C. Yearly rainfall averages 240 millimeters, with slightly lower accumulation in the interior. While precipitation is generally distributed throughout the year and peaks from April to June, El Niño conditions can lead to increased rainfall between November and February.
