Why Viacha

Viacha is an inland city located in the Ingavi Province, within the La Paz Department of western Bolivia. Situated on the high-altitude plateau known as the Altiplano, the settlement lies approximately 22 kilometers southwest of the national seat of government, La Paz.

Historically and culturally, the region surrounding Viacha holds deep roots connected to ancient civilizations. Positioned near both Lake Titicaca and the archaeological site of Tiwanaku, the city functions as a cultural hub for the Irohito-Uru people. These indigenous inhabitants, who are descendants of the Incas, have resided in the surrounding territory for hundreds of years.

The local economy relies on a combination of industrial production and traditional farming. Viacha hosts Cemento Viacha, a major facility operated under the SOBOCE enterprise that stands as one of the largest cement manufacturing plants in Bolivia. Beyond industry, agricultural activities also generate income for the community, with potato farming serving as a primary crop.

Travelers heading to or from Viacha have access to multiple modes of regional transport. The city is connected to the surrounding network by cars, bus services, and a railway line.
