Why Villa Ángela
Villa Ángela is a city located in Chaco Province, Argentina, approximately 186 kilometers west of Resistencia, the provincial capital. Situated within the Gran Chaco, a lowland expanse belonging to the Río de la Plata basin, it is recorded as the third largest municipality in the province, supporting a population of 43,511 according to the 2001 census.
The history of the settlement dates to 1908, when Carlos Gruneisen alongside Julio Ulises Martin—a Swiss native who established the Yerbatera Martin enterprise in Rosario—purchased the property. The opening of La Chaqueña S.A., a tannin manufacturing facility, spurred immediate settlement around the site. Initially known by informal names such as Punta de rieles and km 95, the village was officially established on May 24, 1910, in honor of the May Revolution centennial. It received its permanent name in tribute to Ángela Joostens, the wife of co-founder Julio Ulises Martin.
A prominent cultural attraction for travelers is the city's annual carnival, recognized as one of the major celebrations of its kind in Argentina. First organized in 1950, this extensive public festival takes place every year from mid-January through mid-February, attracting visitors with a month of traditional festivities.
Villa Ángela experiences a subtropical climate characterized by dry conditions during the winter months and very hot, highly humid weather throughout the summer. The locality receives an average annual rainfall of 1,100 millimeters, with historical weather extremes ranging from a record high of 46 °C to a record low of -6 °C.
