Why Villa Luzuriaga
Villa General Luzuriaga, commonly referred to as Villa Luzuriaga, is a city situated in La Matanza Partido within the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Positioned in the first urban belt of the Greater Buenos Aires metropolitan region, the municipality encompasses an area of roughly 9.43 square kilometers (3.64 square miles). Officially granted city status under provincial legislation in 2009, the locality operates primarily as a residential zone, while also accommodating localized commercial and industrial operations.
The city's physical perimeter is defined by key roadways and transit lines. Its borders follow Avenida Don Bosco, Avenida Cristianía, Venezuela, Mon, Bufano, Lartigau, Rivera Indarte, and La Paz streets, along with the Haedo–La Plata railway corridor. Villa Luzuriaga directly adjoins Morón Partido, as well as the neighboring communities of Ramos Mejía, San Justo, Rafael Castillo, and Isidro Casanova. During the 2001 census, the locality recorded a population of 73,681 residents.
Throughout the colonial period, the area was known as Alto Redondo and remained largely rural during the nineteenth century under the ownership of a few landholding families. In 1888, a twelve-room country estate named Villa Las Margaritas was constructed on the land. Following the subdivision of this estate into residential lots in the early twentieth century, local development expanded rapidly. Initial growth was fueled by workers from the Haedo railway workshops and the nearby Ingeniero Brian train stop. Between 1914 and 1947, multiple residential districts emerged, settled initially by European immigrants—predominantly from Italy, Portugal, and Spain—and later by domestic migrants from other provinces and surrounding South American countries. Municipal legislation officially adopted the designation Villa Luzuriaga in June 1939, a date traditionally commemorated as the town's founding.
The municipal center features several community landmarks and public spaces. Plaza Armada Argentina acts as the primary public square, established through the combined contributions of residents and the Argentine Navy. Positioned near Bermúdez and Pichincha streets, the square serves as a site for public gatherings and borders the Stella Maris parish complex, which developed over time from a small chapel. Situated nearby, opposite the local police detachment, is a Flag Monument that was dedicated on June 20, 1945.
