Why Warwick

Warwick is the third-most populous city in Rhode Island, situated within Kent County in the eastern United States. Located roughly 12 miles south of downtown Providence, 63 miles southwest of Boston, and 171 miles northeast of New York City, the municipality forms a major part of the greater Providence metropolitan area.

Spanning a total area of nearly 50 square miles, with water covering over a quarter of its geography, Warwick features an extensive eastern coastline. The municipal boundary begins along the Providence River at its border with Cranston and extends south to Conimicut Point, where the river empties into Narragansett Bay. Further south, the peninsulas of Warwick Neck and Potowomut frame Greenwich Bay. Potowomut functions as a semi-exclave, accessible by land only by traveling through neighboring East Greenwich.

First established in 1642 by Samuel Gorton under the name Shawhomett, the settlement was later renamed Warwick to honor the Earl of Warwick after he assisted in securing a royal charter. The area suffered heavy damage during King Philip's War in the 1670s and later played a significant role in early American revolutionary history. In 1772, local patriots boarded and burned the British revenue vessel Gaspee in Narragansett Bay during the Gaspee Affair. Warwick was also the home of prominent military leaders, including Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene and Civil War General George S. Greene.

Today, the city serves as a key regional transportation hub. It houses Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport, the state's main commercial airport, which provides direct passenger transit via commuter rail to Providence Station and Boston's South Station. Among the city's prominent features is Rocky Point State Park, a scenic coastal area occupying the site of a historic park that closed in 1995. Warwick is also home to the Knight Campus of the Community College of Rhode Island, situated on the former Knight Estate.

Overland transportation throughout the city is facilitated by several primary highways, including Interstate 95 and Interstate 295, as well as Route 37 and the Airport Connector Road. These corridors provide convenient connections across Rhode Island and into nearby Massachusetts.
