Why Waterbury

Waterbury is a city located in the Naugatuck Valley region of New Haven County, Connecticut. Situated 33 miles southwest of Hartford and 77 miles northeast of New York City, it spans 29 square miles, predominantly consisting of land surrounding the Naugatuck and Mad rivers. The local environment falls within a humid continental climate zone, featuring cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers.

Originally inhabited by Algonquin bands who called the interval lands Matetacoke, the area was settled by European colonists in 1674 and incorporated as Waterbury in 1686, named for the streams feeding into the valley river. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the city developed into a major manufacturing hub, earning the title of the Brass Capital of the World. Its industrial output supplied brass and copper for projects across the country, while its clockmakers produced millions of timepieces, including famous dollar pocket watches and character-themed wristwatches. Waterbury was also prominent in silverware manufacturing and defense production.

Visitors to Waterbury can explore a variety of historic structures and cultural attractions that reflect its heritage. The city features landmark clock towers, preserved brass mill buildings, and the Cass Gilbert National Register District, home to the Municipal Center Complex. Notable monuments and sculptures include the Soldiers' Monument, the Ben Franklin statue, the Harrub Pilgrim Memorial, and the Carrie Welton Fountain. Historic sites include Union Station, the Elton Hotel, St. Joseph's Church, and Holy Land USA, a hill park featuring an illuminated cross. Cultural destinations include the Palace Theatre and the Mattatuck Museum, which displays works by Connecticut artists as well as historic silver designs.

The city is organized into 25 distinct neighborhoods that developed around local street-corner commercial areas. Diverse cultural heritage shapes these communities, including Italian, Lithuanian, Irish, Portuguese, Brazilian, Cape Verdean, Albanian, and Orthodox Jewish populations. Neighborhoods such as Washington Hill host annual community events, while Town Plot marks the site of the original 1674 settlement.

Waterbury offers convenient regional access via major highways, positioned alongside Interstate 84 and Route 8. Railroad connections are available through its Metro-North station, providing direct transit toward Grand Central Terminal. Higher education within the city includes Post University, Naugatuck Valley Community College, and regional campuses for several state universities.
