Why Weifang
Weifang is a prefecture-level city situated in the central part of Shandong Province, China, facing Laizhou Bay to its north. The region's geography varies from a forested, low hilly landscape in the south to central alluvial plains and expansive northern coastal beaches. Six major rivers, including the Wei River and Bailang River, flow through the area. Neighboring urban centers in the surrounding region include Jinan, Zibo, Yantai, and Qingdao.
Inhabited since the Neolithic era, the area was home to the ancient Dongyi culture and later became an early center of Buddhism in the region. This heritage is preserved in sites such as the Longxing Temple statue hoard, alongside grottoes at Mount Yunmen, Tuoshan, and Shimenfang. Historical landmarks include the Song dynasty Fangong Pavilion and the Shihu Garden from the Late Ming and early Qing period. Paleontological sites in Linqu County, particularly around Shanwang, feature ancient dinosaur fossils.
Natural points of interest across the area include Mount Yi National Forest Park, Mount Qingyun, and the Old Dragon Spring. Culturally, Weifang is widely recognized for its folk art and seasonal traditions. The city hosts the Weifang International Kite Festival every April, continuing a long tradition of spring kite flying. The local craft tradition also encompasses Yangjiabu wood-block prints, UNESCO-recognized Gaomi papercutting, and traditional ash New Year paintings.
Local culinary specialties include Ji-Ya Hele, a noodle dish cooked in a stewed chicken and duck broth; Rou Huo Shao, a roasted meat pie filled with pork, green onions, and other seasonings; and Chao Tian Guo, where thin pancakes are served with meats and tofu cooked in a large uncovered pot. In the surrounding region, Changle County is recognized for its dark blue sapphire mining. Weifang experiences a four-season humid continental climate marked by cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers, with the majority of annual precipitation occurring between June and September. Air travel to the city is provided via Weifang Airport.
