Why Weinan

Weinan is a prefecture-level city located in the east-central section of Shaanxi province in northwest China. Situated along the lower reaches of the Wei River near its confluence with the Yellow River, the city lies approximately 60 kilometers east of the provincial capital of Xi'an and borders Shanxi and Henan provinces to the east. The name Weinan translates literally to "south of the Wei River," describing the placement of its primary urban districts, though most of the broader metropolitan area and the eastern Guanzhong Plain sit north of the river. Today, Weinan stands as the second most populous city in Shaanxi.

Positioned on the ancient corridor between Xi'an and Luoyang, the area possesses a long history. It was inhabited by the prehistoric Dali Man, and its Xiagui county was established in 668 BC by the state of Qin. The area officially gained the name Weinan in the year 360 under the Former Qin state. During the Tang dynasty, ten emperors were interred in the region. In January 1556, the area near Huaxian was the epicenter of the deadliest earthquake on record. Modern Weinan was designated a prefecture-level city in 1995, and its economy expanded significantly following national economic reforms.

Visitors to the Weinan region can visit several prominent historical and natural sites. Mount Hua, recognized as one of China's Five Great Mountains, is widely known for its long tradition of religious significance. Nearby stands the Xiyue Temple, a historic complex dedicated to the God of Mount Hua. Travelers can also explore Tong Pass, a historically vital strategic mountain pass. The region is additionally famous as the home of notable historical figures, including the Han dynasty historian Sima Qian, Sui dynasty founder Emperor Wen, and the Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi.

Thanks to its location on the plain, Weinan features extensive transport connections. Within the city, public transit consists of numerous bus routes and a large taxi fleet. Road travel relies on major national highways and expressways, with multiple bridges crossing the Wei and Yellow Rivers. Railway transport is anchored by four urban train stations, including the Weinan station on the Longhai line and Weinan North station on the high-speed rail line, which forms part of the expansive Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge. Additional high-speed and standard rail stations serve surrounding districts like Huashan and Dali. While Weinan has no commercial passenger airport of its own, frequent shuttle buses link the main railway station to Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, and a smaller airport is under construction in Huazhou District to support tourism to Mount Hua.
