Why Williston
Williston is a city located in Williams County, North Dakota, serving as the county seat and ranking as the sixth-most populous municipality in the state. Positioned near the southeastern perimeter of the Williston Basin, the community is situated above the Bakken shale formation and the Three Forks Group. Historically anchored in agriculture and livestock ranching, the local economy is strongly influenced by energy resources, including rich underground deposits of petroleum, coal, and potash. Technological developments such as hydraulic fracturing spurred a major oil boom, contributing to a substantial population increase in the 2010s.
The city occupies a geographical position in the northwestern portion of the state, approximately 18 miles from the Montana border and 60 miles south of the Canadian border. It sits near the upper reaches of Lake Sakakawea, close to where the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers meet. Highway transit is anchored by U.S. Route 2, which passes directly through the area, while U.S. Route 85 bypasses the municipality to the northwest. Freight rail services operate in the area, including a major regional grain elevator served by the BNSF Railway.
Founded in 1887, the settlement was named by railroad magnate James J. Hill after his friend, merchant and capitalist Daniel Willis James. Regional attractions highlight the area's frontier, fur trade, and exploration heritage. West of the city near the river confluence, visitors can explore Fort Union and Fort Buford, both tied to the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Additionally, the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located relatively close to the city. Recreational amenities in Williston include two golf facilities: the 18-hole Eagle Ridge Golf Club and the nine-hole Williston Municipal Golf Course. The community also features the Williston Area Recreation Center, a 234,000-square-foot facility constructed in 2014 that provides an indoor track, turf fields, tennis and basketball courts, golf simulators, a water park, and indoor surfing. Cultural and civic life is supported by Williston State College, established in 1961, and the annual Miss North Dakota Scholarship Pageant.
Williston experiences a cold semi-arid climate bordering on a warm-summer humid continental climate, with an average growing season of 121 days. Normal monthly average temperatures range from 11.5 °F in January to 70.4 °F in July. Annual precipitation averages 14.88 inches, peaking in June and July, alongside a seasonal snowfall average of 48.2 inches. Travel to and from the region is facilitated by the Williston Basin International Airport, which opened in 2019, as well as passenger rail service via Amtrak's Empire Builder line.
