Why Wilson
Wilson is a city and the county seat of Wilson County, North Carolina, situated roughly 40 miles or a 45-minute drive east of the state capital, Raleigh. Positioned at key regional roadway links including Interstate 95, Interstate 587, Interstate 795, and U.S. Route 264, it serves as an important hub in eastern North Carolina. Historically recognized in the 19th century as a major agricultural and tobacco trading center, the municipality has developed a broad modern economy supported by manufacturing, commercial, financial, and service sectors.
The community originally formed around the Toisnot Primitive Baptist Church in the early 1800s and was initially called Toisnot. The introduction of the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad line between 1839 and 1840 stimulated local expansion, leading the North Carolina General Assembly to charter the town, which was renamed in honor of State Senator Colonel Louis D. Wilson. Today, the city retains a significant amount of historical architecture, with numerous properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These sites include the Old Wilson Historic District, West Nash Street Historic District, Broad–Kenan Streets Historic District, East Wilson Historic District, and the Wilson Central Business-Tobacco Warehouse Historic District, alongside landmarks such as the Cherry Hotel and the Wilson County Courthouse.
Among the city's primary public attractions is the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, opened in late 2017. The park displays large-scale kinetic metal sculptures, referred to as whirligigs, constructed from salvaged materials by outsider artist Vollis Simpson. Visitors in the downtown area can also connect to free municipal wireless internet, operated by the city's Greenlight fiber optic network.
Wilson's recreational and cultural landscape includes a history of motor sports at the former Wilson Speedway and baseball at Fleming Stadium, with a new stadium near downtown designated for Minor League Baseball. Higher education in the city is provided by Barton College and Wilson Community College, while primary and secondary options include specialized public, charter, and private facilities such as the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf and the Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts and Education.
Travelers can access Wilson through a comprehensive highway system that includes Interstates 95, 587, and 795, along with U.S. Routes 117, 264, and 301. Rail travel connects directly through the Wilson Amtrak Station, while local air transit is accommodated by the Wilson Industrial Airport and the nearby Rocky Mount-Wilson Airport. Within the city, public transportation is provided by RIDE, an on-demand micro-transit service.
