Why Xiaogan
Xiaogan is a prefecture-level city situated in the east-central section of Hubei Province, China. Located roughly 60 kilometers northwest of Wuhan, the provincial capital, the city encompasses a large regional population and a distinct central urban zone centered in the Xiaonan District.
The city's name translates to Filial Piety Moves Tian. This designation stems from the traditional tale of Dong Yong, an individual featured in The Twenty-four Filial Exemplars who famously sold himself into servitude to pay for his father's funeral rites. The region is also associated with the legendary figure Shennong, which ties into local folklore and customs, such as the regional practice of consuming egg dishes boiled with shepherd's purse on the third day of the third lunar month to ward off illness.
Geographically, Xiaogan features diverse landscapes and waterways, including Dawu County, where the Sheshui River has its source. The administrative structure of the territory includes the central Xiaonan District, alongside three county-level cities—Yingcheng, Anlu, and Hanchuan—and three additional counties, which are Xiaochang, Dawu, and Yunmeng.
Visitors to the area can explore its various counties and urban centers, learning about the local heritage and traditional culinary specialties. Among its notable regional foods, the city is particularly recognized for Xiaogan rice wine. Historically and culturally, the area is also noted as the birthplace of prominent figures such as Cheng Shicai and Liu Zhen, and it maintains international civic ties through a sister city partnership with Brest, Belarus.
