Why Ya’an
Ya'an is a prefecture-level city situated in the western part of Sichuan Province, China. Positioned at the western rim of the Sichuan Basin along the upper stretches of the Yangtze River, the area marks a geographical transition between the Chengdu Plain and the Tibetan Plateau. Encompassing 15,300 square kilometres, the city is encircled by mountains and traversed by four rivers. It borders several surrounding prefectures and sits approximately 140 kilometres from Chengdu.
The region possesses a long history, first documented during the Zhou dynasty and later functioning as an administrative county seat under the Qin and Han dynasties. After a period under nomadic control, it was reintegrated into the Chinese Empire, becoming the seat of Ya Prefecture in 604. It briefly served as the capital of Xikang province before being incorporated into Sichuan in 1955. Ya'an is historically celebrated as a cradle of cultivated tea. On Mengding Mountain in Mingshan County, seven tea trees have been preserved for over a thousand years. The city continues to serve as a major processing center for Tibetan brick tea—a dense amalgam of tea leaves, twigs, and other plant materials—along with specialized panda tea.
Wildlife and nature form a central component of local tourism. The region is historically notable as the location in Baoxing County where the French missionary Armand David introduced the giant panda to the Western world. Today, the area hosts the Bifengxia Panda Base, which stands as a prominent local attraction.
Visitors to Ya'an can experience a variety of regional culinary specialties. The local cold-water Ya fish is prominently featured in traditional clay pot dishes. Other regional items include spicy Yingjing Bangbang Chicken, chewy Tata Noodles with hot seasoning, and Zha Zha Mian, which are created by pressing ground buckwheat dough into strips. The region is also known for producing Hanyuan cherries.
Ya'an features a mild, monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. Mountains to the northwest shield the area from cold winter winds, keeping January temperatures around an average of 6.3 degrees Celsius. Summer averages hover around 25 degrees Celsius. Owing to nearly 1,700 millimetres of annual rainfall spread across 213 days—much of which falls overnight—the location is commonly called the "Rain City." The city is connected via National Highway 318, multiple expressways, and the Ya'an railway station along the Sichuan–Tibet railway.
