Located in the Madurai District of Tamil Nadu, India, Yanaimalai—also known as Elephant Hill—gets its name because it resembles a massive sitting elephant, a title it has held for more than 2,000 years. Stretching 3 kilometers long and rising 90 meters high, this sacred protected monument offers a fascinating look into the region's rich spiritual heritage. When you visit, you will find ancient sacred spaces spanning different faiths.

Tamil Jain monks lived on this hill during the Pandyan Dynasty, leaving behind caves near the top filled with stone beds used for resting and impressive bas-relief sculptures of Mahavira, Gomateshwara, and other tirthankaras. Along the hill, you can also spot historical Tamil-Brahmi and Vattelettu inscriptions. Nestled at the foothills are two 8th-century rock-cut temples built by the Pandyas: the Shaivite Ladan cave temple dedicated to Muruga, and the Vaishnavite Yoga Narasimha temple (located in Narasingam) dedicated to Vishnu.

While parts of this granite-rich hill have unfortunately suffered damage from illegal quarrying, its historical Jain temple remains officially protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, making it a truly unique stop for history lovers exploring Tamil Nadu.
