Why Yangquan
Yangquan is a prefecture-level municipality situated in eastern Shanxi Province, China, along the border with neighboring Hebei Province. Historically referred to as Rippling Spring, this modern industrial center sits on the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau along the western slopes of the Taihang Mountains. The administrative area covers over 4,400 square kilometers, comprising three urban districts alongside Pingding and Yu counties.
The terrain is predominantly mountainous, characterized by nine distinct mountain ranges separated by basins, rolling hills, and lower plains. Over 60 rivers flow across the region as part of the Hai River system, with the Hutuo and Mian rivers acting as the primary watercourses. The local climate is dry and continental monsoon-influenced, featuring cold winters and warm, humid summers. Most of the annual rainfall occurs between June and September, accompanied by long annual sunshine hours.
First established as part of Pingding County in 1947, the territory was originally organized as an industrial and mining zone before regaining municipality status and being placed directly under provincial administration in 1983. Known for its rich underground reserves, Yangquan is a major production site for anthracite coal, pyrite, and bauxite, while its agricultural sector produces crops such as walnuts, peppers, and various vegetables.
Visitors to the area can explore several historical, religious, and natural landmarks. Major regional sights include the Niangziguan Pass—often called the Ninth Pass on the Great Wall—and the nearby Niangziguan Waterfall. Cultural and historical points of interest include the Northern Wei Grottoes, the Monument to the Hundred-Regiment Campaign, the Tining Temple Twin Towers, and numerous ancient structures such as the Guanwang, Yaolin, Kaihe, Dawang, and Fujun temples. Outdoor locations include Cangshan Mountain and the thermal waters of Liangjiazhai Hot Spring.
Local regional specialties include walnut oil, vinegar, dried cucumbers, earthenware casseroles, and handcrafted coal carvings. Yangquan is located roughly 100 kilometers from Taiyuan and 140 kilometers from Shijiazhuang, connected via the G20 Qingdao–Yinchuan Expressway and National Highways 207, 239, and 307. Rail travel is served by the Shijiazhuang–Taiyuan railway line, with high-speed connections at Yangquan North station in Yu County and regional service through Yangquan East station. Terminal shuttle facilities in the city also provide direct transportation links to international airports in both Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang.
