Why Yellowstone National Park
Situated mostly in the northwestern corner of Wyoming, with small areas extending into Montana and Idaho, Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 as the first national park in the United States and the world. Spanning 3,468.4 square miles (8,983 square kilometers), the park serves as the centerpiece of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest nearly intact ecosystem in the northern temperate zone. In recognition of its natural importance, Yellowstone was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
Much of Yellowstone's physical landscape is covered by lava flows and rocks from ancient volcanic activity. The park sits atop the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest dormant supervolcano on the continent, which has experienced two massive eruptions within the last two million years. Heat from this ongoing volcanism powers more than half of the world's geysers and hydrothermal features, including the famous Old Faithful geyser. Geographic features across the park also include high-elevation mountain ranges, deep canyons, rivers, and Yellowstone Lake, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America.
Subalpine forests dominate the vegetation, alongside expansive grasslands that harbor rare plant species. Yellowstone is home to hundreds of animal species, including threatened or endangered wildlife, and represents the largest concentration of megafauna in the contiguous United States. Notable inhabitants include grizzly bears, cougars, wolves, elk, and the country's oldest and largest public bison herd. Natural forest fires occur annually, with one major burn in 1988 affecting more than a third of the park's territory.
Indigenous peoples have inhabited and used the region for at least 11,000 years, leaving behind over one thousand documented archaeological sites. Organized exploration by non-natives began in the late 1860s, culminating in the creation of the park by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1872. Following three decades of management by the U.S. Army between 1886 and 1916, administration was transferred to the National Park Service in 1917. Today, hundreds of historic structures within the park are protected for their architectural significance.
Yellowstone offers diverse outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and sightseeing. Major waterfalls, lakes, and geothermal areas are reachable via paved roads. During the winter season, guided tours using snowmobiles or snow coaches provide primary access to the park's interior.
