Why Yingkou
Yingkou is a coastal prefecture-level city situated in central southern Liaoning Province, People's Republic of China. Located along the northeastern shore of Liaodong Bay on the northwestern portion of the Liaodong Peninsula, it sits on the eastern bank of the Daliao River mouth. As an important port metropolis, it serves as a major maritime trade gateway, with its commercial port ranking among the busiest container handling facilities in the Bohai Sea region and Northeast China.
The city covers an area of over five thousand square kilometers and includes ninety-six kilometers of coastline. Its main built-up area encompasses the urban districts of Zhanqian, Xishi, and Laobian, alongside the county-level city of Dashiqiao. Yingkou is situated roughly 166 kilometers south of Shenyang, the provincial capital, and 204 kilometers north of Dalian. It is bordered by Anshan to the north and east, Panjin to the northwest, and Dalian to the south, while sharing maritime borders across the bay with Jinzhou and Huludao.
Historically, the city was opened as a treaty port following the 1858 Treaties of Tianjin and was internationally referred to as Newchwang. The original inland settlement of that name was located approximately thirty miles upstream along the river. However, because the river was too shallow for foreign trading vessels near the original site, maritime activity was relocated downstream near the coast, establishing the modern city at its current location.
Yingkou experiences a four-season humid continental climate influenced by seasonal monsoons and tempered by its position on the Bohai Gulf. Winters are cold, windy, and dry, whereas summers are hot and humid, with the majority of annual rainfall occurring in July and August. The city enjoys abundant annual sunshine, receiving over 2,700 hours of bright sunlight per year, with average monthly temperatures ranging from −8.3 °C in January to 25.1 °C in July.
Air transit to the city is supported by the Yingkou Lanqi Airport. Local industrial and development zones focus on key sectors including steel, chemical production, mineral processing, logistics, and textiles. Additionally, the city is home to the Liaoning Flying Leopards basketball team, which competes in the Chinese Basketball Association.
