Why Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park is a protected natural region covering 1,187 square miles in central California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. Bordered by the Stanislaus and Sierra National Forests, the park spans portions of Tuolumne, Mariposa, Mono, and Madera counties. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, the sanctuary is managed by the National Park Service, with nearly 95 percent of its area preserved as wilderness. Yosemite is internationally recognized for its towering granite cliffs, dramatic waterfalls, alpine lakes, giant sequoia groves, clear streams, high mountain meadows, glaciers, and rich ecological diversity.
The physical landscape of Yosemite is defined by granite bedrock and remnants of older geological formations. Approximately ten million years ago, the tectonic uplift and tilting of the Sierra Nevada created steep slopes drained by sharp river canyons. Subsequent glacial movements around one million years ago sculpted the iconic U-shaped Yosemite Valley. Although the park encompasses an expansive habitat block, the majority of its roughly four million annual visitors concentrate their time within the seven-square-mile expanse of Yosemite Valley.
Human history in the area spans thousands of years, with Native Americans inhabiting the region for nearly four millennia. The Ahwahneechee, a group affiliated with the Southern Sierra Miwok, were the primary residents within the valley, relying on acorns, native plants, deer, and salmon. European Americans entered the area in the 19th century, leading to conflict and the 1851 arrival of the Mariposa Battalion, which forcibly removed many Indigenous residents. Today, native history is commemorated at the Yosemite Museum and the adjacent reconstructed Indian Village of Ahwahnee near the main visitor center.
Yosemite played a pivotal role in the early land conservation movement in the United States. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant to safeguard Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove for public preservation. Naturalist John Muir and other advocates later campaigned for broader protections, leading Congress to establish Yosemite as a national park in 1890. Prominent historical features within the park include the giant sequoias of the Mariposa Grove, Curry Village—established in 1899 as Camp Curry—and the historic Ahwahnee Hotel constructed in the late 1920s.
