Why Yunfu
Yunfu is a prefecture-level city located in western Guangdong Province, China, bordering the Guangxi region as well as neighboring municipalities such as Zhaoqing, Foshan, Jiangmen, Yangjiang, and Maoming. The municipality covers an area of nearly 7,787 square kilometers and is defined by a landscape where forests account for over 67 percent of the land. The Xi River flows directly through the area, serving as a prominent geographical feature and a key commercial waterway.
The region has a long recorded history dating back to the ancient Baiyue peoples. It fell under the jurisdiction of various commanderies during the Qin and Han dynasties and was part of the Nanyue Kingdom. Historically recognized under names such as Dong'an between 1578 and 1913, the region was renamed Yunfu in 1914 and officially designated as a prefecture-level city in 1994. Today, it is home to a diverse population that includes several indigenous and settled ethnic minority groups, notably the Zhuang, Yao, Dong, and Miao. A variety of languages are spoken across its districts, dominated by the local Yunfu dialect of Cantonese alongside Hakka, Min-nan, and Taigu dialects.
Visitors to Yunfu can explore several scenic and cultural destinations. Key points of interest include the Sixth Patriarch's Hometown Tourist Resort—associated with the historical Chan Buddhist leader Huineng—as well as the Tianlu Mountain Tourist Resort, the Jinshuitai Hot Springs Scenic Area, and the underground formations of the Panlong Cave Scenic Area. Culturally, the city maintains multiple public libraries, art centers, and museums showcasing regional heritage.
Yunfu is globally recognized for its abundant natural resources. It features vast deposits of minerals, including marble and granite, making it a prominent center for stone mining and carving, as well as holding China's largest deposits of pyrite. Additionally, the region's diverse ecosystem supports more than 670 plant species utilized in traditional medicine.
The city experiences a subtropical climate with comfortable weather throughout the year, featuring an annual mean temperature of 22 °C. Springs tend to be dry and overcast, summers bring warm weather and rain, autumns are cool, and winters remain dry and sunny. Yunfu is well connected via regional transit networks, including the 324 National Highway, the Guangzhou-Wuzhou Expressway, and the Sanshui-Maoming Railway. Water transportation is centered along the Xi River, where the Yunfu New Port functions as Guangdong's largest inland port facility.
