Why Zhangzhou

Zhangzhou is a prefecture-level city situated along the banks of the Jiulong River in the southeastern corner of Fujian Province, China. Positioned across from the Taiwan Strait, the city surrounds neighboring Xiamen and forms a single continuous urban area with it. The broader prefecture comprises four urban districts—Xiangcheng, Longwen, Longhai, and Changtai—as well as seven outlying counties including Dongshan, Hua'an, Nanjing, Pinghe, Yunxiao, Zhangpu, and Zhao'an.

The regional geography connects Zhangzhou with several other key areas in southeastern China, sharing borders with Quanzhou to the northeast, Longyan to the northwest, and Shantou in Guangdong Province to the southwest. The local climate is classified as monsoon-influenced humid subtropical, featuring mild to warm winters alongside long, hot, and humid summers. Monthly mean 24-hour temperatures range from 13.2 °C (55.8 °F) in January to 28.8 °C (83.8 °F) in July, supported by an annual frost-free period spanning 330 days.

Historically, Zhangzhou developed as a prominent commercial and maritime trading hub. During the early Qing Dynasty, it served as a principal Fujianese port for trade with Macao and Manila, supporting local production in silk, bricks, sugar, and tea. The region is also the birthplace of Babao seal paste, a distinct craft item formulated in 1673 that earned imperial recognition for its vivid hue and fragrance. Linguistically, while Mandarin is used for official administration and schooling, the Southern Min dialect of Hokkien is widely spoken among locals, with Hakka also present in western and southern rural communities.

For regional travel, Zhangzhou is connected through two main passenger train hubs. The older Zhangzhou East Railway Station operates along the Yingtan–Xiamen Railway northeast of the city center. South of the city, the primary Zhangzhou Railway Station serves as a junction for high-speed rail travel, connecting the destination along both the Xiamen–Shenzhen Railway and the Longyan–Xiamen Railway.
