Lagos Central Mosque is a landmark jum'at mosque situated on Lagos Island along the busy Nnamdi Azikiwe Street in Lagos, Nigeria. As the principal home of the Chief Imam of Lagos, who acts as its custodian and leads Friday prayers, this sacred site holds immense religious and historical significance for the local community. Originally established by the Jamat Muslim Council of Lagos in the early 20th century, the historic structure was replaced by a modern complex designed by G.
Cappa Ltd, which officially opened in May 1988. When you visit, you will appreciate its striking architecture spanning roughly one acre. The exterior features four prominent minarets—two smaller ones crowning the entrance and two taller ones flanking the building's east and west wings.
As you enter, you pass through a decorated columned riwaq leading into a spacious courtyard, or Sahn. At the heart of the complex lies a massive 750-square-meter prayer hall topped by a dramatic 15-meter metal central dome clad in eye-catching gold-plated aluminum. The multi-purpose complex also encompasses an office block, reference library, Islamic centre, an apartment for the Chief Imam, and lower-level space used for a drive-in garage and vaults honoring deceased Imams and prominent community members.
