As one of Germany’s largest art museums, the Hamburger Kunsthalle invites you to explore seven centuries of European art history right in Hamburg’s Altstadt, situated between the central train station and the Alster lakes. You will step through three connected, architecturally distinct buildings: the original 1869 red-brick main structure, the 1921 domed Kuppelsaal, and the striking 1997 cubic Galerie der Gegenwart sitting near the Binnenalster. Inside, you will wander across four sprawling sections that take you from medieval times to the present day.

You can admire medieval altars by Master Bertram and Master Francke in the Gallery of Old Masters alongside masterpieces by Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens. In the Gallery of 19th-century Art, you will discover stunning German Romanticism, including works by Caspar David Friedrich, alongside pieces by Monet and Degas. Further along, the Classical Modernism section showcases trailblazers like Picasso, Munch, and Klee.

Finally, step into contemporary art spaces to experience post-1950 Pop Art, photography, video art, and works by Andy Warhol and David Hockney. With around 20 special temporary exhibitions each year, this vast collection offers an unforgettable journey for art lovers.
