Welcome to Atlanta, Georgia, where you can discover a unique piece of local history: the Erskine Memorial Fountain. Located in historic Grant Park—in the area that today houses Zoo Atlanta—this was Atlanta's very first public fountain. Designed by sculptor J.
Massey Rhind and dedicated in May 1896, it was originally funded by the daughter of Federal judge John Erskine to honor her late father. Although the fountain was initially situated at the intersection of Peachtree and West Peachtree Streets, street regrading in 1912 prompted public outcry and led to its relocation to Grant Park, where it once overlooked Lake Abana. When you visit today, you will encounter a historic monument featuring an ocean-inspired design complete with intricate inscriptions of the Zodiac signs and an accompanying bench.
While the fountain is currently inoperable, missing its original bronze drinking cups and decorative ornaments, and showing signs of past neglect, it remains a notable stop for history lovers. Restoration efforts are currently underway via the Erskine Fountain Fund and a $100,000 grant awarded to the Grant Park Conservancy to preserve this historic piece of Atlanta's heritage for future generations.
