Spanning 58 hectares (140 acres) on the eastern shore of Manila Bay in Ermita, Rizal Park, Luneta is one of the Philippines' largest historic urban parks. Adjacent to the historic walled city of Intramuros, this historic site has served as a backdrop for pivotal moments in Philippine history.
Originally known as Bagumbayan, the land became notorious for public executions during Spanish rule, including the garrote execution of three Filipino priests in 1872 and the execution of national patriot, writer, and poet José Rizal on December 30, 1896, which galvanized support for the Philippine Revolution. Today, you can explore the park's symbolic focal point—the Rizal Monument enshrining his remains—alongside Neo-classical edifices built during the American colonial era, such as the National Museum of Anthropology and the National Museum of Natural History surrounding Agrifina Circle.
The park also features the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, the Noli Me Tangere Garden, and a restored musical dancing fountain. Over the decades, it has hosted massive historical gatherings, including the 1946 inauguration of the Third Philippine Republic, historical papal Masses, and key political demonstrations leading to the 1986 People Power Revolution.
