Located in the Osu neighborhood of Accra, Ghana, along the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, Osu Castle—also known as Fort Christiansborg—is a historical structure deeply rooted in West Africa's colonial past and the Atlantic slave trade. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the castle offers an incredible testimony to centuries of shifting power. Originally built as a small lodge and expanded into a substantial fort by Denmark–Norway in the 1660s, it later changed ownership among the Portuguese, Akwamu, British, and eventually post-independence Ghana.

It served as the capital of the Danish Gold Coast, held enslaved people, and later functioned as Ghana's seat of government before operations moved to Jubilee House. Because of various historical extensions, the castle features an unorthodox shape. Visually, the site encompasses extensive gardens maintained by thirty staff members, showcasing local and imported plants used for official receptions.

The complex enlarged over time to include store rooms, garrison quarters, platforms, bastions, and structural features rebuilt following an 1862 earthquake. Notable foreign dignitaries, including several U.S. presidents, have visited this oceanfront landmark. Note that Osu Castle is closed to walk-in visitors, but its solemn history remains central to Accra.
