You will find the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall standing at the east end of Memorial Hall Square in Taipei's Zhongzheng District. Erected in memory of former President Chiang Kai-shek, this national monument features traditional Chinese architecture, a four-sided white structure, and an octagonal blue roof symbolising abundance and good fortune. You can ascend two sets of 89 steps, representing Chiang's age at death, to reach the main hall where a large statue of Chiang Kai-shek sits.
Inside, the ground level houses a library, museum, and permanent exhibitions detailing Taiwan's history, Chiang's life, and the nation's road to democracy. Surrounded by a park spanning over 240,000 square metres, the site is flanked by the National Theater and National Concert Hall. Beyond its monumental role, this area—centered around Liberty Square—became a hub for historical pro-democracy demonstrations like the 1990 Wild Lily student movement.
In recent years, the memorial has evolved into a space reflecting on Taiwan's martial law era and human rights. On Democracy Boulevard, you can observe honor guard drill performances, while the square's main gate proudly displays calligraphy reading Liberty Square, celebrating Taiwan's vibrant modern history and ongoing commitment to freedom.
