Located in Taipei’s Zhongshan District on Chingshan Mountain, the National Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine offers you a striking look into Taiwan’s history while overseeing the Keelung River. Built in 1969, its classical architecture recalls the famous Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing's Forbidden City. You will find that the shrine is dedicated to the war dead of the Republic of China, housing the spirit tablets of about 390,000 individuals killed during major historical events, including the Xinhai Revolution, Northern Expedition, Second Sino-Japanese War, Chinese Civil War, and the Taiwan Strait Crises.
Interestingly, while the shrine sits in Taiwan, most of the honored soldiers were born in mainland China. Following a 1998 legal amendment, non-military heroes are also enshrined here; you can learn about honored civilians such as police officers, firefighters, a postal worker, SARS healthcare workers, and a brave teacher. During your visit, you can observe a disciplined changing of the honor guard performed by branches of the Republic of China Military, mirroring rituals seen at other famous national memorials.
