Sugar House Monument 🇺🇸

When you explore Salt Lake City, make sure to visit the Sugar House Monument, a historical landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Erected to honor early manufacturing and pioneer hard work, this fifty-foot obelisk stands about 200 feet east of the original 1855 sugar mill site. Although the initial attempt to process sugar beets into refined sugar failed, the surrounding area prospered as Salt Lake’s second downtown.

Created by sculptor Millard F. Malin alongside Edward Anderson and Lorenzo Young, the monument features detailed artwork topped by a light. As you approach, look for the two eight-foot relief figures near the top depicting Native American history: a militant eastern figure with war implements and a defeated western figure holding a peace pipe.

At the base, you will see two eight-foot statues representing the productive Salt Lake Valley and a mill builder pouring water over a wheel. Take time to examine the north bas-relief showing the original mill, and read the inspiring plaque urging the spirit of courageous venture to characterize the community. It is a unique piece of history celebrating the enduring spirit of early settlers and local industry.
