Forty Martyrs Cathedral

Located in Aleppo's historic Jdeydeh quarter, the Forty Martyrs Armenian Cathedral is a historic 15th-century Armenian Apostolic church and a vital spiritual home for the local Armenian community. As one of the oldest active churches in both Aleppo and the broader Armenian diaspora, this three-nave basilica stands out for its rich heritage and distinctive architectural details. Built in 1491 to replace a small chapel, the cathedral honors Roman soldiers martyred near Sebastia.

Inside, you will discover a vast collection of over 30 ancient and modern icons, including the famous 1703 canvas "The Last Judgement" by Nehmatallah Hovsep. As you explore the grounds, you can admire its three altars, an upper story added in 1874, a baptismal font from 1888, and a striking 1912 bell tower that represents a unique example of baroque architecture in Aleppo. The cathedral compound also features a 1991 khachkar memorial commemorating genocide victims and houses the nearby Zarehian Treasury museum within the former Holy Mother of God church.

Despite suffering damage in 2015, the surviving cathedral and bell tower were reconstructed and reconsecrated in 2019, making it an extraordinary testament to resilience and faith.
