Designed by sculptor Truman Howe Bartlett and cast by the Gruet Foundry in Paris, the impressive eight-foot bronze figure rests atop a imposing seven-foot granite pedestal added around 1890.

Facial details were crafted directly from a death mask made by Wells' associate, John Mankey Riggs.
