Step into American history at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois. Built between 1837 and 1840 in the Greek Revival style using yellow limestone from Crow's Mill, this former state house served as the seat of Illinois government from 1840 to 1876. You will discover a venue deeply tied to national political milestones. It is here that Abraham Lincoln served his final term as a state lawmaker, pleaded cases before the Illinois Supreme Court, and delivered his famous 1858 "House Divided" speech announcing his U.S.

Senate candidacy. Decades later, Barack Obama launched his presidential campaign on these grounds in 2007. Inside, you can see reconstructed historical spaces designed to look as they did in 1860. Explore the Illinois House chamber—where Lincoln’s body lay in state in 1865—alongside legislative chambers, executive offices for the Governor, and the Supreme Court room.

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961, the building was meticulously dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt in the late 1960s. Today, you can explore the site on your own or join a 30-minute guided tour to experience this historic museum.
