If you love music history and serene Swiss landscapes, a visit to Villa Senar on the shores of Lake Lucerne near Hertenstein is a must. Built in 1932 by the famed Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, this unique estate gets its name from combining the first letters of his and his wife Natalia's names with their surname. Designed by Swiss architects Alfred Möri and Karl Friedrich Krebs, the villa features a strikingly modern architectural style.
It was created to remind the composer of his former family estate, Ivanovka, in southern Russia. As you explore, you will discover the birthplace of masterworks like the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and the Third Symphony, both composed here during the summers the family spent at the estate before moving to the United States in 1939. Beyond its musical heritage, the estate hosted prominent Russian immigrants like Ivan Bunin and Vladimir Horowitz.
Following its purchase by the Canton Lucerne in 2022, the villa opened to the public on April 1, 2023, offering you a rare glimpse into Rachmaninoff's cherished summer retreat, complete with its original surrounding park and a magnificent rose garden.
