Located about 20 kilometers from Chandigarh along the Chandigarh-Zirakpur-Patiala route, Chhatbir Zoo—formally known as the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park—offers you an incredible look at diverse wildlife. Established in the 1970s and named in 1977 after the former governor of Punjab, this expansive facility originally began with a small group of animals brought from the Guwahati Zoo in Assam and quickly grew into the largest zoo in Punjab. Today, you can explore a vibrant ecosystem that houses 369 mammals, 400 birds, and 20 reptiles.
As you walk through the grounds, you will encounter remarkable mammals such as the Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, jaguar, Indian elephant, and sloth bear, along with unique species like the smooth-coated otter and striped hyena. Bird lovers will be captivated by India’s longest walk-in aviary, a 300-meter pathway displaying 32 species of indigenous and exotic birds divided into five themed sections: Terrestrial, Rock & Duck, Woodland, Japanese Trail, and Rainforest. You will also see impressive reptiles, including the gharial, mugger crocodile, and Indian python.
Whether you want to admire majestic predators or stroll through immersive bird habitats, this historic park promises an engaging experience near Chandigarh.
