If you are exploring the Jung District of Daegu, South Korea, Dalseong Park offers a fascinating mix of ancient history and family-friendly attractions. Designated as Historic Site of South Korea No. 62 in 1963, this space sits on a low hill that once housed an Iron Age settlement and a Three Kingdoms-era fortress built around 261 AD, known as Dalbeolseong.
With a 1,300-meter circumference, the site served as a fortress until the early Joseon period and is considered the ancestral home of the Dalseong Seo clan. It was later used as a Japanese military base during the Sino-Japanese War before opening as a public park in 1905 and undergoing renovations in 1965. When you visit today, you can walk among historic landmarks like the Gwanpungnu Pavilion, explore the local history hall, and view various monuments.
The grounds also feature the Dalseong Park Zoo, where you can see a diverse collection of animals. Animal residents include an Asian elephant, hybrid tigers, a brown bear, a chimpanzee, sika deer, a plains zebra, crested porcupines, monkeys, and birds such as Indian peafowls, pheasants, Cinereous vultures, and Eurasian eagle owls.
