Shwenandaw Monastery

When you visit Mandalay, Myanmar, you cannot miss Shwenandaw Monastery, also known as the Golden Palace Monastery. Located near Mandalay Hill right next to Atumashi Monastery, this historic site holds a unique place in history as the single remaining major original structure of the original Royal Palace. Built in the traditional Burmese architectural style, the structure was originally part of the royal palace at Amarapura before moving to Mandalay, where it served as part of King Mindon Min's royal apartments in the Glass Palace.

In October 1878, his son King Thibaw Min dismantled and relocated the building at a cost of 120,000 rupees, believing it was haunted by his father's spirit. Reconstructed in just three weeks and dedicated to his father's memory, the monastery became a tranquil place where King Thibaw practiced meditation. As you walk through, you will admire walls and roofs adorned with intricate teak carvings of Buddhist myths.

Though it was originally heavily gilt with gold and embellished with fine glass mosaic work, its historical timber framework remains breathtaking. Be sure to look for the actual meditation couch used by King Thibaw during your visit to this magnificent wooden masterpiece.
