Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan 🇲🇽

Located in downtown Zapopan in Jalisco, Mexico, the Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan is a striking 17th-century Franciscan sanctuary and one of Western Mexico's most visited sites. You will find a monumental example of colonial Spanish Baroque architecture, complete with Ionic columns, sculpted reliefs, and a main altar crafted from Italian Carrara marble. Visiting this active abbey allows you to discover a valuable relic: a wooden Virgin statue brought from Spain in the 16th century, also known as La Generala or Our Lady of Expectation.

The sacred figure rests on a 17th-century cypress pedestal carved by local artisans. Beyond its spiritual significance, the basilica complex houses a rich art collection, including bronze statues of Pope John Paul II (who visited in 1979) and Father Antonio de Segovia. While exploring the site, you can also visit the adjacent Huichol Museum to view permanent exhibits showcasing the indigenous art of the Huichol, Tepehuan, and Cora people, or head to the north side to see the Museum of the Virgin of Zapopan.

The surrounding area features other historic colonial structures, such as the Zapopan Entrance Arch and the Municipal Palace.
