Located on the northern banks of the Vaigai River in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, the Goripalayam Mosque is a prominent mosque and dargah complex built for Muslim subjects by Thirumalai Nayak. Its name originates from the Persian word gor, meaning grave, as it houses the tombs of two 13th-century rulers and Islamic saints from Oman, Sultan Alauddin Badusha and Sultan Shamsuddin Badusha. Visitors can also honor the invisible grave of Khaja Syed Sultan Habibuddin Razi, known as Ghaibi Sulthan.

As you explore the grounds, look for the impressive dome—measuring 21 meters (70 feet) in diameter and 6.1 meters (20 feet) high—crafted from a single block of stone brought from the Azhaga Hills. Outside, you can spot the beautiful green tomb visible from the nearby A.V. Bridge and inspect an ancient Tamil inscription on the outer campus detailing a 1573 A.D. legal verdict by King Veerappa Nayakkar regarding the dargah's land.

Pilgrims from all across Tamil Nadu travel to this historic 13th-century sanctuary to seek blessings, making it an essential, deeply meaningful stop when discovering Madurai's rich spiritual heritage.
